This band was revealed to me recently and ate my mind. Thanks for your post - I've been scouring the net and any reference is appreciated. I agree with your comments, especially this one:

'I cannot express how essential this exploratory album is for heads (people into psychedelia). Garden of the Elks is so forward looking that even today, people still have not unlocked its secrets nor do they understand its worth'

This album, and the follow up 'Delayed' (unreleased at the time but fortunately retrieved from the mists of time and released on CD), are pure head/trip music. To me, certain music created in the 60s and 70s seems to encode and transmit psychedelic 'data' in a unique and unequalled way. As much as there is wonderful psychedelic music from other eras, it seems to me nothing quite touches the lysergic wonder and magic of those times.

On a side note, apparently there is at least one live recording that has circulated: Live at Stora Teatern Goteborg 12 Nov 1973. If anyone has this would love to see it made available.

Garden of the Elks is the translation of the band's name. The album title means, "The Future Is a Hovering Ship, Anchored In The Past.
