Don’t forget Arthur by the Kinks either – the idea was hatched around the same time as Tommy but the Kinks had some internal issues which prevented them from releasing the record on time.

I’m not sure I totally understand the calculus that separates ‘Rock Operas’ from ‘Concept Albums’ – I’ve always used those phrases interchangeably. I’m also reluctant to step on Part 2 of your post, but this is just too juicy of a topic to pass by. So here are some of my favorite albums that I think fall somewhere in this category:
