It’s not uncommon for men of a certain age here in the UK to have a mild obsession about the romance of the American road trip – Route 66 and all that, y’know: there’s nothing in these small islands to compare (don’t mention the M25). I’ve been a big fan of road trip movies ever since seeing Easy Rider back in ’69. I just love the likes of Zabriskie Point, Two Lane Blacktop, Vanishing Point et al. My dream trip would be to travel the length of The Mother Road alternating between a Harley low rider and a Cadillac Eldorado De Ville. Sadly, the nearest I’m ever likely to get to such an expedition is a nostalgic trawl through tunes such as those in this Podcast:

The Rolling Stones “You Can’t Catch Me†from No. 2 (UK), Now (US), 1965. Written by Chuck Berry, the ultimate songs-about-cars man.
Roy Orbison “I Drove All Night†from King Of Hearts, 1992, the posthumous album assembled by Jeff Lynne using demos and incomplete sessions.
Woody Guthrie “Car Song (Car Car)†from The Very Best Of Woody Guthrie, 2002 compilation. Original provenance uncertain; Guthrie recorded the song several times.
Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen “Hot Rod Lincoln†from Lost In The Ozone, 1971.
Green On Red “Frozen In My Headlights†from Too Much Fun, 1992.
Jerry Reed “East Bound And Down†from East Bound And Down, 1977. Theme from THAT movie . . .
Robert Johnson “Terraplane Bluesâ€, 1937 Vocalion single. Eric Clapton is on record as saying it’s almost impossible for one guitarist to play this tune alone.

Dave Edmunds “Crawling From The Wreckage†from Trax On Wax 4, 1978. The solo features Edmunds on String-Bender Tele.
Primal Scream “Kowalski†from Vanishing Point, 1997, the album inspired by the 1971 road movie. (Point of interest: the original plan was for the movie to be soundtracked with Delaney & Bonnie’s Motel Shot, featured elsewhere on The Rising Storm. This was vetoed because of the cost of licensing the music.)
