. . . and a rather good performance from Dean Martin, playing an alcoholic. (Shouldn't have been too demanding for him.) Oh, and the Mariachi trumpet music ain't bad, either. Muy bien tocado, muchachos. The tune they play is called "Deguello" which also happens to be the title of a ZZ Top album.
"And still they gazed, and still their wonder grew
That one small head could carry all he knew"
Thomas Gray, "The Schoolmaster".

New band, perhaps, but not altogether a new sound for Eric Hilliard Nelson. I have a twofer on vinyl, compiled by UK reissue label See For Miles Records in 1987, comprising Bright Lights And Country Music (originally 1966) and Country Fever (1967), two albums which mark the rebirth of the former pretty-boy pop star as a solid country rock singer well before the tag "country rock" was minted. These each offer eleven well-chosen covers, some being country standards, some being real rarities, plus a single original. The supporting musicians include James Burton, who'd stuck with Nelson during the difficult post-pop years, mainly on dobro (and hey, can that man play dobro . . .) but occasionally on blazing Telecaster, pianist Glen D Hardin, who with Burton went on to back Gram, Elvis and Emmylou, Glen Campbell on various instruments, and The Jordanaires. According to the excellent sleeve notes on this compilation, Nelson went on to cover contemporary singer-songwriters including Tim Hardin and Randy Newman, but, fired by hearing Dylan's Nashville Skyline, formed the Stone Canyon Band, which is where this post picks up the story. Hearing John Fogerty's recent near note-for-note cover of "Garden Party" reminds me of where Rick Nelson's heart really was at the turn of the seventies.

Nice post, brendan! was thinking of reviewing this one...right on about the cheesy lyrics - but there are many fine moments on the record...the e. anderson song is quite good.

One small nit-picking comment...Nelson was the younger son of Ozzie and Harriet Nelson's.
