De Luxe was an anticlimax, simply a good country-rock album, with more rock than country. Gilded Palace was exceptional, groundbreaking, definitive. The songs were beyond reproach: "#2" still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Pete Kleinow's fuzzed pedal steel is simply revolutionary. Gram was a heaven-blessed singer. Gib Gilbeaux's voice does the same thing to me as fingernails on a blackboard - ugh!

I agree that the album is a mild disappointment when compared to GPS but when compared to 80% of the slew of albums released in the golden era of country-rock is still, in my opinion, way ahead of the curve. And that include any albums by the later period Burritos (Gilbeaux era) or Firefall. It still has that 'rough around the edges' production quality and retains a lot of country elements. More than can be said for the slick, designed for FM stuff to come out of the genre later on.
