It doesn't get much better than having the artist himself discover your review of his work, especially forty years on, and complement you on it! Thanks, Paul, and glad you're enjoying the site.

Just come accross your site and read your Velvet Opera review. You're right, we did all enjoy making this LP. It was recorded in Southern Music Studios in London's Denmark Street (Tin Pan Alley) in the 60's. We were all resident session musians at this little 4 track studio, in the basement of Southern's publishing offices. You wouldn't believe the amount of hits that were created from there, most penned by John Carter and Kenny Lewis. Re: Dave McTavish. When Johnny Joyce and I left the Opera, both Colin Forster ( Elmer Gantry's original guitarist before I took over) and Dave McTavish of Tintern Abbey, joined the Opera and they recorded several tracks under the bands name.
Interesting too, is the fact that The Mark Leeman 5's, Terry Goldberg, also joined Tintern Abbey in the latter stages at my request. I always rated Terry as a great keyboard player, as I did the Leeman's. It's a pity we never got to record anything with Terry, as he gave the group a whole different dimension.

Great site and intelligent reviews.

Thanks, Paul Brett (Guitarist)

Great post and links. In reading the Elmer Gantry link, an interesting fact was that the first EGVO song Flames was covered by an early Led Zep in their live act, the only non-Zep number (excluding Dazed and Confused of course, Jimmy....) In listening to Flames on YT you get the picture, a killer track that is right in the early Zep territory. Also on YT was the VO Don't You Realise and Black Jack Davey, both great trax. Makes Ride A Hustler's Dream (great album title BTW - and album cover art for that matter...) a certain purchase.

For much more on the three incarnations of the Velvet Opera (yes, there was another attempt to revive the outfit by some of its original members in 1971), go here:
www.marmalade-skies.co.uk/elmer.htm .
Marmalade Skies is a very entertaining and colourful website dedicated to British sixties psych, with a good selection of rare pictures.

Whoops, that link to Julian Cope's Tintern Abbey webpage seems to be a bit wonky. If it doesn't work, go here: www.headheritage.co.uk/unsung/review/1744/ .
